Friday Feel Good: Giving a Baby Squirrel a Hand

Updated May 26 2009 - 10:34am · Posted by · 24 comments

What better way to say TGIF than to watch this heartwarming and epic video about a mom squirrel and her baby trying to jump a wall on the UCLA campus.

At first, it looks like no matter how many times the mom squirrel tries to show her baby how it's done, it will never happen because the baby is too little. (Everyone let out a collective, "Awwww!") Well, I'm not here to harsh your mellow, so of course it gets better. Some students find a creative way to lend the baby a hand. I guarantee that even those with the blackest, most cynical hearts will feel a beam of sunshine breaking up the clouds. (And the soundtrack isn't half bad, either.) TGIF!

Do You Have Any Self-Destructive Habits?

A US appeals court upheld a 2006 ruling today saying that cigarette makers lied about the risk of smoking and could no longer use the labels "low tar" and "light." In addition, the ruling found cigarette companies like Philip Morris guilty of racketeering and fraud.

Most of us don't need the court system to tell us that cigarettes are unhealthy and potentially deadly, but even in health-obsessed San Francisco, I see young women lighting up all the time (outside, of course).

In a recent Dr. Phil episode on drunk driving, a young woman admitted to drinking every night and some mornings, and yet denied she had a drinking problem. She even told the audience that she had everything under control because she bought an air mattress to put in the back of her car for those girls' nights out involving heavy drinking — so she could sleep it off in the back seat! You know you have a drinking problem when . . .

Do you have any self-destructive habits — daily pot smoking, or drinking and/or smoking too much — and are you doing anything to take care of yourself?

Emotional Affairs: Just as Bad as Regular Affairs

Updated May 28 2009 - 8:58pm · Posted by · 29 comments

Just like old-fashioned physical affairs, emotional affairs can leave a partner feeling deceived and betrayed. An emotional affair isn't filled with steamy hotel-sex sessions; instead, the unfaithful find themselves confiding in and flirting with a "friend" of the opposite sex. They look forward to the other person's attention in the form of secretive meetings, phone calls, text messages, or emails, while they withdraw from their partners. While there's no sex, the most hurtful marker of an affair is there: the breach of trust.

One marriage counselor says more of her clients are having emotional affairs these days. She credits the abundance of sexually suggestive material in modern magazines, film, television, and overall society, which makes it hard to know when we cross the line of inappropriate behavior.

Do you think it's obvious when you step into emotional-affair territory, or is it hard to tell when a friendship has stopped being harmless?

Love It or Leave It? American Apparel's Cut-Out Stockings

Updated May 23 2009 - 11:49am · Posted by · 34 comments

What I mean to say is, ass-less stockings. The lovely Sasha Grey models these "sheer luxe cut-out panty hose," which are coming soon to American Apparel. I'm still trying to figure out if they have a utilitarian ass-pect, or if they're strictly for show.

Girl Crush du Jour: Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Updated Jun 1 2009 - 8:03am · Posted by · 10 comments

I love when the female lead of a band commands the stage, and Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, a New York City-based indie electro pop-rock trio, has talent and charisma to spare. (And check out this girl's style! To die for.) From her crazy dancing, to her amazing voice, to her talent for rocking punky bowl-cuts (and crimson red lips), Karen O rocks. Literally. Oh Snap! Barack Obama Outsources His Presidential Visits

A wax figure of President Obama took a vintage streetcar to the Wax Museum at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco yesterday. Right before that, the wax president crossed the San Francisco Bay in style on his way to the wax museum aboard the USS Potomac, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's presidential yacht.

Mars Candy Wants You to Pleasure Yourself

Updated May 22 2009 - 5:46pm · Posted by · 15 comments

If you've seen the commercial for Mars' newest candy bar "The Fling," you probably thought you flipped to a racy movie. The ad makes it look like people are having sex in a bathroom, when in fact it's just a woman eating a candy bar in a dressing room. The commercial is so sexually charged that the voiceover even calls on women to pleasure themselves with the fingers (that's what they're calling candy bars these days). And if sexy talk and sparkly pink packaging wasn't enough to get women to buy the bars, Mars makes sure to mention that each finger only has 85 calories. Score!
