Do You Have Any Self-Destructive Habits?

A US appeals court upheld a 2006 ruling today saying that cigarette makers lied about the risk of smoking and could no longer use the labels "low tar" and "light." In addition, the ruling found cigarette companies like Philip Morris guilty of racketeering and fraud.

Most of us don't need the court system to tell us that cigarettes are unhealthy and potentially deadly, but even in health-obsessed San Francisco, I see young women lighting up all the time (outside, of course).

In a recent Dr. Phil episode on drunk driving, a young woman admitted to drinking every night and some mornings, and yet denied she had a drinking problem. She even told the audience that she had everything under control because she bought an air mattress to put in the back of her car for those girls' nights out involving heavy drinking — so she could sleep it off in the back seat! You know you have a drinking problem when . . .

Do you have any self-destructive habits — daily pot smoking, or drinking and/or smoking too much — and are you doing anything to take care of yourself?

I don't have any of these problems but my father is a serious smoker and he doesn't believe all the hype about smoking being bad for you.

I have no physically destructive habits, as I'm a health geek. My vices are more mental. :) I have a neurotic bent, and I can obsess and obsess and obsess over something (even trivial matters). I stress myself out, I give myself insomnia, and in effect, make myself miserable over a certain matter. It's overreacting. It's psychologically unhealthy. As I've gotten older, I learned to dial back on that, but once in a while, I fall back on that old habit. I drive myself crazy, and it's self-inflicted. It's my fault. :)

That's what I was thinking, GlowingMoon: my worst self-destructive habits are all mental. I get into negative thinking patterns: expecting the worst of a situation, overreacting, making mountains out of molehills... leading to anxiety and depression. It's something I'm trying to work on, but habits are hard to break.
I get my cuticles cut when I get manicures. maybe "unhealthy" more than "self-destructive"

I am a smoker. I don't like the health risks but I do it anyway. I also rarely exercise, have not so great eating habit, and get 5 to 6 hours of sleep a day. I am a walking time bomb.
none what so ever.

I'm with Glowing and Pistil. My vices are totally in my head/emotions. Outside of that I don't drink excessively (like, maybe a cocktail or glass of wine once a week) or smoke at all, but my food habits need some help.

the only thing i can think of, and which i've changed very recently, is smoking hookah. it's especially bad because im on birth control. just as cigarette smoking, hookah smoking can also increase the risk of getting blood clots. so thats out the window.

I used to drink and party in my early 20s to the point of near-alcohoism. Today, I can't even have a glass of wine without getting a hangover. I run seven miles a day, don't touch fattening foods and live a very healthy lifestyle. So, yeah - just like glowingmoon, my bad habits are mostly mental.

Unfortunately, I smoke not that much I can spend days almost weeks without touching a cigarette but as soon as something make me feel frustrated or angry I start smoking again. In the other hand, I'm on my healthy way to lose some weight, so I go to the gym 3 to 4 times a week, eat as healthy as possible, still I guess smoking will be art of my whole life, probably until I get kids, I wouldn't be a smoking mom.

I hangout and drink every weekend with my friends. We play drinking games and/or go to bars. I smoke cigarettes when I drink so those are my 2 most unhealthy habits and they go hand in hand. I do exercise and eat healthy as strange as that may sound.

I have no physical bad habits besides not working out enough and (temporary, due to money shortage) bad eating habits. I really have the mental ones though, like many others here have mentioned. For me, it's that randomly, I'll become insanely self conscious, and start to be convinced everyone hates me/is talking bad about me. That usually starts a downward spiral in my self esteem that takes a rude awakening to halt. I'm trying to beat this tendency, but it still pops up over the most trivial things.

Self-destructive is a bit strong, but I have completely screwed up sleeping habits. My brain is starting to resent that... It causes me to have a hard time concentrating during the day, going for coffee to keep me focused and then not being able to fall asleep at night because of it... It's a mess, and not healthy at all.

I've completely fallen out of eating healthy and I'm not drinking enough water or getting enough exercise.

I eat a lot of the wrong things. I don't get enough sleep and exercise. And I procrastinate way too much. But yet, I manage to get everything done. I guess my mind is thinking it's okay to do all these things because I haven't 'cracked' yet. But when I do, I'm sure it will be really really bad.

I feel so bad next to you health nuts. I abuse caffeine like theres no tomorrow, drink wine like it's going out of style and don't sleep enough. I also can't stay away from the melting moments at work. Such delicious cookies! I try to balance it with a healthy diet, not mixing caffeine and alcohol and exercising a lot. I also recently quit smoking and feel a lot better for it.

i'm a heavy smoker (and yes, i do know the health risks). i drink a can or two of coca cola a day, plus take no doz for the caffeine daily as well. i get daily headaches so take aspirin whenever these hit. i rarely exercise, eat badly, and survive on 4-6 hours sleep a night. wow, writing that all makes me sound horrific.

I drink way too much wine. Most nights I have 2-3 glasses and have even more on the weekends. Oh well.

Too much caffeine... and probably saying some not completely cruel but not kind things about certain family members, still trying to learn that I'm only making my bitterness worse.

Only when I get overemotional/angry/depressed, I engage in self-destructive behavior for the purpose of being self-destructive. I stop eating, I take pills when I don't need to, physical self-harm. It's not a regular habit, just when I'm feeling like the scum of the earth. I can remember behaving this way since I was a kid. It's like a 'feeling sorry for myself' attention seeking thing that I never grew out of, though I never allow myself to receive attention for it.

I have problems with an impulse control disorder called dermatillomania. I subconsciously and consciously pop pimples, squeeze blackheads, scratchs off scabs, you name it. I'm actually in the process of trying to control it at the moment (and it's going marvelously, my skin looks better than it ever has), but it's INCREDIBLY difficult, especially since I do it so often without noticing. Other than that, I don't really have any vices. I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, or anything else along those lines.

I smoke weed almost every day. However I do not feel this hinders me in anyway. Although I do not plan on smoking pot forever I see nothing wrong with doing it in college.

Smokers are the most disgusting people in the world. Especially since they feel its appropriate to blow there smoke towards not smokers. Blow your cancer in your own face not mine. I wish they would ban it everywhere.

I get into negative thinking cycles all the time.

I don't purposely blow my smoke in ANYONE'S face, anon 32. Don't take it so personal if you stand down wind.
i'm with symphonee. i will ALWAYS stand away from strangers when smoking and be as careful as i can not to blow smoke in any passer-bys face, and only smoke while sitting down if i'm sitting away from others. if you sit next to me after i've already lit my smoke, that's your prerogative.

i smoke pot. a lot. and i have been on the dean's list for my entire college career, and maintain a job and great relationships with both my family and friends. i don't consider it self destructive at all.
I don't drink much (maybe 1 drink every 2 weeks) and I definitely don't smoke (anything). To those who smoke, PLEASE don't go through fast food drive thrus smoking, I've had asthma attacks from inconsiderate customers. Also, please don't stand by doors while smoking, almost everytime I go to the mall or to a restaurant, I have to make sure no one is smoking nearby before I can get out of my car. I have no problem with people smoking away from me, I'm not anti-smoker, I'm anti-life for myself and my asthma :)

@danakscully - I can respect that. I am usually the smoker who holds the smoke in until someone finishes walking pass. I try to respect other people's space.
Thank You :) Us asthma people appreciate that :) I almost had to be hospitalized once because of it... my inhaler wasn't working fast enough and I almost passed out. I had bronchitis at the time.

I have a bad cocaine problem. I use it every day and I barely eat at all when I'm on it. It's given me hypertension and bipolar disorder. But it's ok. I'm going to rehab this summer =)

You guys don't know what you're doing! Smoking is self-destructive!!! My uncle died in his 50 because he smoked his lungs off, you are going to get there too if you don't stop! Yes, Smoking does make neurons release endorphins, but that will cause your body stop producing that substance itself and you brain will require more and more because the body produces tolerance. Your body can produce endorphins by itself when working out, especially when running. (runner's high, yeah why does it have to be a smoker's high? running has a lot of benefits) Your self worth is not maintained by smoking to be cool, but to have respect for who God created you to be, and to live a beautiful, God and self honoring life. As the screenwriter of 14 movies in which cigarettes are a significant ingredient, Joe Eszterhas, is now paying for the cost of smoking. In an interview with CNN, Eszterhas is expressing regret for the part he has played in promoting smoking on TV, after being detected for throat cancer, the result of a life-long smoking habit. He got to a point where he has considered himself an accomplice in the murders of (possible) many human beings. Make a decision today. what legacy do you want to leave? The legacy of a TB or throat cancer, smoking addict, or of a free man/woman ? http://archives.cnn.com/2002/SHOWBIZ/Movies/08/12/eszterhas.cnna/
