After yesterday's Diamond Jubilee Derby, the queen is today accompanied by Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry, Pippa Middleton, and more members of the royal family on the Royal Barge, the Spirit of Chartwell. The queen and her troupe are at the center of a flotilla with more than 1,000 boats floating down the River Thames. This massive flotilla — one of the largest ever to gather on the river — includes row boats, working boats, passenger boats, and boats filled with members of the armed forces and police. Stars and Royals Celebrate Queen Elizabeth at the Diamond Jubilee Derby

Updated 06/03/12 3:39 AM · Posted by · 2 comments

Today is Queen Elizabeth II's first official event as part of her Diamond Jubilee Central Weekend. It's the 233rd Epsom Derby — this year named the Diamond Jubilee Derby in honor of the queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The Epsom Derby kicked off with Ladies Day yesterday, and women sported eccentric hats and plenty of Union Jack attire. As the country's most prestigious horse race, the event draws a who's who of England — including, of course, the royal family. At today's event, Queen Elizabeth presented the Diamond Jubilee Coronation Cup to the winning horse, Camelot, who was trained by Aidan O'Brien and ridden by O'Brien's son, Joseph. Katherine Jenkins sang the national anthem, and members of the royal family like Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie attended the races — along with some stars including Mischa Barton — to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's big event. We've already taken a look back at the royal family's Epsom Derby presence over the years, but now we're offering a glimpse of this year's sightings. Check out the best moments from the Diamond Jubilee Derby now!

Disney Princess It Girl: Snow White's Pop Culture Evolution

Updated 06/01/12 8:00 PM · Posted by · 3 comments

We've all got fairy tales on the brain, as the very first Disney princess, Snow White, is having her moment in the sun. This year we've got not just one but two star-studded movies about Snow White, her evil stepmother, and those seven mining dwarfs. First up was the Lily Collins-Julia Roberts version Mirror Mirror, and starting today Kristen Stewart will take on the role in Snow White and the Huntsman.

While the flicks differ in many ways, they both portray the heroine as more of a modern woman who doesn't need a Prince Charming to sweep her off her feet. This is a far cry from the Disney version we're all familiar with, but Snow White has taken on many different forms since being brought to the masses by the Brothers Grimm in their 1812 German fairy tale Schneewittchen und die sieben Zwerge (Snow White and the Seven Dwarves). Find out more about the inspiration for their tale and how Snow White has been portrayed in literature, art, film, and TV over the years.
