What to Know and Where to Watch the Queen's Diamond Jubilee

Updated 06/03/12 7:44 AM · Posted by · 1 comment

The Diamond Jubilee is another way to say 60 years since Queen Elizabeth II became queen. Technically, it kicked off on Feb. 6, 2012, 60 years since her father died in 1952 and she replaced him as monarch at the age of 25, but the main event starts Saturday. Queen Elizabeth II is only the second British monarch to reach 60 years on the throne. Back in 1897, when Queen Victoria marked the same anniversary, she was much more feeble, having to celebrate the Jubilee service from her open carriage sitting outside of St. Paul's Cathedral. If you know little about Queen Elizabeth, you'd likely recognize her in bright colored outfits and big hats still visiting gathered crowds at age 86. She's not slowing down for the upcoming Central Weekend, which includes celebrations across the UK and Commonwealth for the queen's 60-year rule, from Saturday, June 2 to Tuesday, June 5. If you want to follow along at home, here's what you should know. You might even consider throwing a Diamond Jubilee party, complete with Corgis, favors, and tea.

Who: The royal family and commoners alike.
What: Street parties, a concert at Buckingham Palace, a flotilla pageant down the Thames, and more!
Where: In London, across the UK, and throughout the Commonwealth, the group of nations formally belonging to the British Empire, some of which still have Queen Elizabeth as their head of state.
When: Monday, June 4 and Tuesday, June 5 are bank holidays, so it'll be a long four-day weekend. Here's the breakdown of the official events.

  • Saturday, June 2: The queen, an avid horse lover, will attend the Epson Derby, the most prestigious horse race in Britain.
  • Sunday, June 3: Everyday people will get together for The Big Jubilee Lunch, a meal shared among neighbors in the form of a traditional street party or small picnic. Meanwhile, the queen will participate in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant, consisting of 1,000 boats from across the UK, the Commonwealth, and around the world. The queen and Prince Philip will be on the Royal Barge, the center of the flotilla.
  • Monday, June 4: The BBC is throwing a concert at Buckingham Palace, with tickets open to the public and kicking off at 7:30 p.m. London time. The queen and other members of the royal family will enjoy music by Elton John, Annie Lennox, Paul McCartney, and more.
  • Tuesday, June 5: The big party ends with a day of celebrations in Central London. There will be carriage rides, a service at St. Paul's, and an appearance at Buckingham Palace by the royal family at approximately 3:25 p.m. London time — maybe Will and Kate will sneak a kiss again.

Of course, royal watchers, anglophiles, and history lovers can check back here for photos and a breakdown of it all!

See Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations so Far

On Feb. 6, Queen Elizabeth II marked 60 years on the throne. To commemorate the Diamond Jubilee, the royal family has traveled around the world on her behalf; Prince Harry enjoyed a successful royal tour in Central America and the Caribbean. The queen herself has been staying closer to home for the festivities. Wednesday, Queen Elizabeth attended a dinner for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and yesterday she presented the former Australia Prime Minister John Howard with the Order of Merit award at Buckingham Palace. And earlier in the week, Queen Elizabeth was joined by Kate Middleton, as well as Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, for a royal tea party at Buckingham Palace. These events were held ahead of this weekend's official Diamond Jubilee celebrations, which will take place over four days starting tomorrow.

Other events have included inspecting Gloriana, the new royal barge built for the Diamond Jubilee. The 86-year-old monarch held onto her hat as she and Prince Philip, 90, braved the wind and rain to visit the pier on the Thames to see the barge that will carry Queen Elizabeth and her husband down the river during the upcoming celebrations. She also headed to Manchester, England, where she even found time to crash a wedding! The couple had invited her royal highness, knowing she would be in town. A lady in waiting sent a letter declining their invite, but plans were in fact made for the queen to surprise them.

For the first official Diamond Jubilee event, the queen was joined by her husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and Kate Middleton. In Leicester, Kate and the queen watched a fashion presentation, meeting up with Prince Philip later for a service at Leicester Cathedral and lunch. Queen Elizabeth really seems to be enjoying herself. You might not know it, but the queen has a laid-back side to her. She reportedly isn't afraid to put on lipstick in public, text message her grandkids, and has a big heart for her racehorses and Corgis. We've rounded up pictures from all the festivities! Check them out now.

The Man Behind the Monarch: A Look at Charming Prince Philip Over the Years

Updated 06/01/12 3:34 PM · Posted by · 1 comment

Queen Elizabeth is currently marking her Diamond Jubilee, but she already celebrated her diamond wedding anniversary back in 2007. Before Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth in 1952, she married the handsome foreign prince from Greece who also happened to be her third cousin, the now Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

According to Sally Bedell Smith's new biography, Elizabeth the Queen, Philip came from a tumultuous background despite his lineage. Born in 1921 on Corfu, he moved to Paris with his parents, Prince Andrew of Greece and mother Alice, at age 1. By age 8, he'd headed to England for boarding school. While there, his parents separated following his mother's nervous breakdown. She later went back to Greece to start an order of nuns. His father took a different path, living as a socialite in Monte Carlo. As for Philip's four sisters, they married wealthy Germans, some of whom had Nazi ties. That meant Philip couldn't go back to visit as World War II approached.

With generous amounts of good looks and confidence, Philip was able to make his way in England with the help of royal relatives. He met his cousin Elizabeth first at a family wedding in 1934 and then again at the coronation of her father in 1937. He would later be invited to have lunch with the royal family, and that's when Elizabeth reportedly fell for him. During World War II, Philip and Elizabeth wrote each other letters. By 1946, he was back in London and making regular visits to Buckingham Palace. During that Summer, he spent a month at the royal family's Balmoral Estate, where he proposed. At the king's request, they kept it a secret until after her 21st birthday. The wedding was held at Westminster Abbey on Nov. 20, 1947. While on their honeymoon, he wrote a letter to his new mother-in-law, explaining his "ambition to weld the two of us into a new combined existence that will not only be able to withstand the shocks directed at us, but will also have a positive existence for good."

During their almost 65 years of marriage, 60 of them during Elizabeth's reign as the monarch, Prince Philip has been as constant as the queen herself, although he's a bit more controversial, making quite a few insensitive gaffes. But when he's not giving the press an unfortunate quote to run, he's either by the queen's side, working as a patron for 800 charities, or, until recently, enjoying carriage racing. At age 90, he doesn't look like he's slowing down, despite a recent heart scare over Christmas. Let's look back at pictures of Prince Philip over the years.

Kaitlin and Aaron are part of an international love story. They met at a nightclub in Alicante, Spain, the city where Kaitlin, who's American, was studying abroad and Aussie Aaron was taking time off from his job Down Under to travel. Kaitlin recalls their out-of-order introduction: "The night we met, he told me I was incredible, we kissed, and then we introduced ourselves." Next, they made the most of the month they had together before Aaron went on from Spain to travel more, staying in touch and meeting up again in Ireland for a few days before Kaitlin headed back to the States. They'd spend the next year and a half on opposites sides of the world, with Aaron in Sydney and Kaitlin near San Francisco. Once she graduated, Kaitlin packed her bags and moved to Australia. They've been together ever since, and after dating five years, they got engaged.

After a nine-month engagement, Kaitlin and Aaron invited friends and family to celebrate their wedding in Paris, France. Kaitlin says, "We were first married legally in Kenya — just the two of us and our two witnesses. Our second wedding in Paris was an intimate celebration of life and love. We wanted simplicity. Good food, good wine, and great company in a magical city. A fabulous celebration with people we loved." The ceremony took place at the iconic Hôtel de Crillon located at Place de la Concorde in the French capital.

Paris proved to be a lovely destination for both sides, coming from either America or Australia, and it also made for some stunning photos. See tons and learn more about how this destination wedding came together now.

How Real Mad Men Used Women to Sell Cars in the '60s

Updated 05/29/12 3:56 PM · Posted by · 0 comments

"Jaguar. At last. Something beautiful you can truly own." That's the slogan Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce came up with to win the Jaguar account this week on Mad Men. Throughout the process of vying for Jaguar, it's clear that the show's ad men have no respect for women. The creative team uses a mistress as its muse for the slogan, comparing a woman to a car. Only the car is better than a woman because you can own it, just like you wish you could own your woman. While the copy editors come up with sexist slogans, the SCDP partners pull a more shocking move, conspiring to prostitute out their colleague Joan Harris to a higher-up at Jaguar with hopes of securing the account. Even the stately Bert Cooper says it's hard to put a price on adding a coveted car to the company's portfolio, implying that Joan's worth is less than the benefit of winning Jaguar.

Joan's sexual objectification provides a literal reference to how women were used to sell cars. The real 1960s Jaguar slogan, "A cat of a different breed," alluded to women, and subsequent tag lines included, "Domesticated. Not Declawed." Or, "Nobody's Pussycat." The British carmaker wasn't alone. Copy on a '60s-era Ford ad, featuring a seductive-looking young woman in the passenger's seat, reads, "So luxurious inside, watch 'em overguess the price." Are they talking about the car or the woman?

Check out some 1960s car ads featuring women. I'd love to say we've come a long way. But just flip on the TV and you'll see that car ads featuring sexualized women aren't getting kicked to the curb any time soon.

Books by First Ladies

Michelle Obama can add author to her résumé. The first lady's new book, American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America, is out today, and while it won't cover hard-hitting policy or politics in the White House, it does serve up a healthy portion of photos, details about the White House garden, and feel-good American values. Michelle isn't the first first lady to byline a book. But often the diaries and autobiographies come after the husband leaves office. Eleanor Roosevelt, Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton, and many more first ladies have published books. Take a look at some of them now.
