How the Victoria's Secret Idea of Sexy Has Evolved

Angels will fly down the runway tonight at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, which airs Dec.

Angels will fly down the runway tonight at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, which airs Dec. 10. Visually pleasing underwear became popular at the end of the 19th century, but it took until the 1990s for Victoria's Secret to celebrate lingerie with its annual fashion show. The brand's spectacle of scantily clad models was initially held before Valentine's Day, but in 2001, the show was televised and moved to the start of the holiday shopping season. That's not the only thing that's changed over the years. The lingerie modeled has evolved from high-waisted and shiny to made-for-TV costumes straight from a feathery fantasy.

Some have complained about the show's indecency, and it was canceled in 2004 after America was scandalized by Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl. But since then, the show has gone on, giving us at least one take on what's considered sexy through the years. As the Angels walk tonight in this year's show, take a look back at the styles they've worn in past shows.

5 Reasons to Write a Novel and 1 Reason Not To

During National Novel Writing Month, aspiring writers challenge themselves to write a novel of 50,000 words or more.

During National Novel Writing Month, aspiring writers challenge themselves to write a novel of 50,000 words or more. I decided to chat with a professional novelist — Nina LaCour, author of YA hit Hold Still and this year's The Disenchantments — to find out if this is a good idea. Good news: she thinks it is. Find out five reasons to write a novel now.

1. It's fun.

"Writing is difficult and can be frustrating, but it's ultimately fun because you get to create and inhabit this other world for a while. I have my own life, and then I get to live the lives of my characters. It's almost like you gain experiences by imagining people's lives."

2. You learn new skills.

"My characters [in Hold Still] are in high school photography class, so I learned how to develop film in a dark room. I learned something that I never knew I would learn because my characters were doing it and I wanted to write about it in an authentic way. I enrolled in a class and learned how to expose and develop photos."

3. You get to know yourself.

"It's a process of discovery. When you're writing a novel, you're learning stuff about yourself and about the rest of the world. You're trying to grapple with big human issues and pushing yourself and growing and learning. It's a great feeling of being inspired and creating art, which I think is one of the greatest joys in life."

Feminist Romance Novels to Hop in Bed With

Has the romance genre embraced feminism with strong, muscular arms?

Has the romance genre embraced feminism with strong, muscular arms? That's the question explored in an Atlantic article about how romance novels and feminism became unlikely bedfellows. Writer Jessica Luther explains that in the 1970s, feminists were challenging the patriarchy, while romance novels played into it. Today, however, many younger authors write while taking the gains of feminism for granted.

A heroine who makes choices, an undermining of gender expectations, and women enjoying sex for pleasure are all characteristics of "feminist" romance novels. Still, today's authors, like Cecilia Grant, do admit in the article that bodice-rippers and the women's movement don't always go together seamlessly. In the article, Grant explains, "A romance novel, by definition, privileges the romantic relationship above other aspects of the characters' lives. And in a culture that already bombards women with the message that finding and keeping a man is their most important goal in life, it can be difficult to make a case for romance as a feminist-friendly medium."

Even so, in many modern romance novels, a woman is the subject of sex, rather than the object, and that should be considered a positive advancement and worthy example. So this National Book Month, get a taste of romance novels with feminist flair.

Confessions of a Romance Novel Cover Girl

Confessions of a Romance Novel Cover Girl

You've seen the steamy scenes in the supermarket checkout aisle, while perusing Barnes & Noble, or perhaps on your own bookshelf, but did you ever stop to think about the real people who pose for romance novels? Actress and model Serene Aandahl always loved playing dress-up as a little girl, and as an adult she has a job that lets her do that for a living: romance novel cover girl. We caught up with Serene to get an insider look into a typical photo shoot, her bare-chested better halves, and the potentially awkward moments. Here's what we learned:

POPSUGAR: Do you read the books?
Serene Aandahl: I like to read the last couple pages of my novels. Romance authors have a way of tying up a story, letting both the heroine and her man keep their independence, while also surrendering completely to the love they have for each other — which I never get sick of reading. Add a marriage and a newly discovered pregnancy, and you’ve got the completion of the female fantasy.

PS: How many have you done?
SA: A lady never tells.

PS: OK, so how did you get into it? And is it fun?
SA: It all started with one audition, and the rest is history. I absolutely love shooting romance book covers; I get a little giddy every time because as a girl I used to play dress-up for hours, and now it's my career. I love and look forward to it every time.

PS: If your life were a romance novel, what would it be called?
SA: "A Lady Not Yet Tamed"

That's just a taste of what Serene told us. Click through to see 10 of her covers and to find out more details on her favorite shoots, her hot male costars, and other behind-the-scenes secrets of shooting romance book covers.

Liz Lemon's Guide to Being a Lady

Liz Lemon's Guide to Being a Lady

We're Lizzing with excitement! Tina Fey is hosting the SNL season premiere this weekend, and in honor of the funny lady's return to the tube, we're celebrating her most beloved role: Liz Lemon on 30 Rock.

During the show's run, Tina turned Liz into a TV icon for the modern woman. Liz is a confident and successful working woman and loyal friend, yet she's still hilariously self-deprecating in a relatable way. And we can appreciate her sense of humor about her dating life, which included a string of handsome goofball love interests played by the likes of Matt Damon, Jon Hamm, Jason Sudeikis, and James Franco. It was a fun run watching Liz find her own version of happily-ever-after. Now let's honor her with some of our favorite Liz Lemon GIFs. After all, there "ain't no party like a Liz Lemon party 'cause a Liz Lemon party is MANDATORY!"

Cheers! An Evolution of Beer Advertising For Women

Oktoberfest kicks off this weekend, so let the beer-drinking season commence! You'd think modern women would be free to consume whatever alcoholic beverage they choose without it accompanying stereotypes, but alas, it's been a love-hate history of beer ads for women. The '50s and '60s may not have been forward-thinking eras for females, but that doesn't mean sexist beer advertisements and marketing campaigns aren't any less common nowadays. Advertisers are old pros at using clichés and generalizations about women in hopes of getting them to buy their hops. Let's put on our beer goggles and take a look at female-targeted beer ads over the years.

7 Things You Didn't Know About Sex Addiction

Before Tiger Woods gave his celebrity endorsement to sex addiction, we debated whether it's an easy excuse or a mental health issue.

Before Tiger Woods gave his celebrity endorsement to sex addiction, we debated whether it's an easy excuse or a mental health issue. But now it seems more people are treating it as a serious condition. Sex addiction has gone mainstream in movies like Shame and now Thanks For Sharing, out today.

We already took a look inside sex rehab clinics to find out what to expect when you're reforming, but here are seven facts about sex addiction you might not have been aware of already.

  1. Sex addiction is relatively new: According to a Time piece, "Only in the past 25 years have we come to regard excesses in necessary cravings — hunger for food, lust for sex — as possible disease states." The term "sexual addiction" was first used in the DSM-III in 1980, but it was removed in 1994.
  2. It's not official: In the recently released DSM-V, sex addiction is a gray area. There isn't a full entry on hypersexuality — the clinical term for sex addiction — but it is filed under conditions that require more research.
  3. An orgasm a day is considered troublesome: The Time article explains, "Seven orgasms a week (either alone or with someone) is still considered by many experts to be a threshold for possible disorder."
  4. Recovering addicts go to extreme measures: Sex addiction specialist Tim Lee gives some examples that include not riding the subway and not using dollar bills, because they're associated with strip clubs.
  5. It's lucrative: If the APA decides to recognize sex addiction, it would mean a huge windfall for the mental health industry. Time explains: "Some wives who know their husbands are porn enthusiasts would force them into treatment. This is already happening. In the year since Woods made sex addiction famous, rehab facilities accustomed to dealing with alcoholics and drug addicts have found themselves swamped with requests for sex-addiction treatment."
  6. Women struggle, too, but differently: According to Lee, he currently counsels two women compared to 90 men. He adds that women are more likely to be addicted to love. And, yes, love and sex addiction rehab is a real thing.
  7. Some treatment resembles religion: The Time author recounts a session he attended: "People read aloud from manuals-cum-bibles — like AA's Big Book, Sexaholics Anonymous has its White Book — that are filled with harrowing personal stories and vague generalities. (From the White Book: 'sexual sobriety includes progressive victory over lust.') About halfway through each meeting, a donation-collection plate is passed around, just like in church."

Bad Dating Habits It's Time to Give Up

It's National Singles Week, so why not take this time to refresh your dating life?

It's National Singles Week, so why not take this time to refresh your dating life? After all, the changing of the seasons is always a great time to reassess your well-being. Here are some bad dating and relationship habits to swear off. And if you're taken, we've got some tips for you, too.

  • Tipsy texting. Give up those drunk dials that only make a hangover worse.
  • Waiting for guys to make the first move. If you want to meet guys, you have to put yourself out there. Something as simple as a smile or flirty eye contact will do.
  • Living in the past. Let yourself forget your failed relationships, disappointments, or mistakes. Releasing that baggage will make you more open to new experiences and people.
  • Wasting time on a guy you're not into. He may be good on paper, but if you don't have the spark or see a long-term future, don't date him.
  • Wasting time on a guy who's not into you. Ditch the guy who's sending you mixed messages. Next!
  • Hiding your true self. You want to be that "cool girl" who doesn't care if he hangs out with the boys every weekend. But if it bothers you when he doesn't give you enough time and affection, tell him. It's the only way you'll find a truly happy, sustainable relationship.
  • Focusing on his flaws. Is his hairline receding? Did he talk about his job a little too much when you first met him? Did he make an awkward joke in front of your friends? If you focus on these minor flaws instead of your overall connection, you're never going to get past the first date. Don't settle, but also give a guy a chance to impress you.
  • Focusing on your flaws. Whether you get down about the fact that it's been ages since your last relationship or that you're more shy than your other friends, don't let that dictate your dating life. Instead, think about what makes you and your personality attractive and promise that you'll accentuate those qualities.
  • Worrying constantly about what your friends think. Don't let your friends' opinion of your man's job, personality, looks, or background influence you too much or turn you off from a guy. Listen to their earnest advice, while trusting your own feelings for him.
  • Limiting yourself to a type. Don't let the words "he's not my type," leave your mouth, whether you're online dating or getting set up on a date.
  • Waiting for his text or call. Stop letting his text or lack thereof make or break your day.
  • Always going back to an ex. It didn't work out for a reason. Instead of wasting emotional resources on an ex, resist the temptation to text, Facebook stalk, or meet up for a hookup when you're feeling lonely.

Britney's back, bitch. The pop singer just released her new single, "Work Bitch," a club-ready song about working hard to get what you want, be it a "hot body" or a "Maserati." It's a positive message from Brit, and it's got us thinking about what else we've learned from her songs.

Vintage Fashion Ads With Sex Appeal

Sex, which doesn't require any clothes, has long been used to sell them over the years. In the '80s, a teenage Brooke Shields told the world that nothing comes between her and her Calvins. The controversial ads raised eyebrows for their overt sexual appeal, but long before Brooke's Calvin Klein campaign, the fashion industry did its best to seduce customers — and it still does today. As New York Fashion Week kicks off today, let's look at some sexy, and sometimes sexist, vintage fashion ads.

E.L. James's Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy has both inspired and brought to light a number of hot and heavy BDSM series written for women. So if you're looking for your next titillating tome now that you've gone Grey, here are some old and new erotica titles to try for steamy end-of-Summer reading.

Labor of Love: Should a Relationship Take Work?

The end of a relationship's honeymoon period typically comes with a realization that your partner can in fact do some wrong.

The end of a relationship's honeymoon period typically comes with a realization that your partner can in fact do some wrong. It may start to bother you that he's not as social as you'd like, tunes out when you're venting about friends, or has irresponsible spending habits. And as time goes on, and you start to take each other for granted, it might take more effort to make time for date nights, sex, or other romantic moments.

For some, these bumps along the way are signs that something's soured, but others accept them as relationship realities that couples need to work out with counseling, occasional drawn-out arguments, or old-fashioned compromise. This Labor Day, I'm curious: do you think love should take work, or should we strive for seamless partnerships?

5 Ways to Heat Up Your End-of-Summer Romance

Nothing's more seasonably appropriate than a Summer fling.

Nothing's more seasonably appropriate than a Summer fling. But with Labor Day here, the sun is setting on this romantic time of year. Whether you're in a long-term relationship that's seen many Summers or in the midst of a budding romance, check out five ways to keep Summer lovin' hot for as long as possible.

  1. Skip PJs on a warm night: When night falls on one of the few scorchers we inevitably have left, make it a sexy occasion by sleeping next to your partner sans clothes.
  2. Take a weekend road trip: Even if you don't have time to take off work, skip town with your guy before the season of vacation ends. You can spend a night at a bed and breakfast or make a day trip to the beach.
  3. Go on late-night walks: The days are only getting shorter, so appreciate the long days of Summer by taking a romantic evening walk with your man. It can be around the block after work, or around town after a run to your favorite ice cream spot. A hand-in-hand stroll is the perfect way to disconnect from everyday stresses and connect with each other.
  4. See a movie at the drive-in: While you watch a movie from the privacy of your own car, no one will interrupt your make out session or tell you to pipe down as you make flirty jokes.
  5. Take an outdoor nap: Whether it's in your backyard hammock or on a blanket in a park, take advantage of the pleasant weather and Summer smells with an outdoor cuddle session.

Famous Women With Alternative Views on Happily Ever After

Cameron Diaz turns 41 today, and if there's one thing the birthday lady is known for (besides her sex appeal), it's how outspoken she is about being a proud single woman. And she's in good company. Not all women are committed to the institution of marriage. With career success, friendships, travel, or other hobbies taking priority, many women don't have bridal on the brain. Or, perhaps experience has helped some decide traditional relationships just won't work for them. Famous women often make headlines when they say "I don't" to marriage, kids, or other trappings of a conventional happily ever after. To balance out mainstream marriage mania, here are a few of the more articulate quotes from celebrities with alternative views on relationships.
